Interview with Rutger Bäumer:

Question: What initially drew you to the music industry and working at a record label?

Rutger: It went in phases. it started with producing music. This led to my tracks being signed to record labels and from that point it got me interested in knowing how labels work. When I got the opportunity to work for Hysteria it was a no brainer.

Question: If you didn't work in the music industry, what would you do instead?

Rutger: I would probably be in the IT sector. That's my education.

Question: How do you handle the pressure and demands of the music industry while maintaining your own well-being?

Rutger: You need to make sure you're making time for other things what you like the most and what relaxes you. For me it's my family and friends. Balance that out.

Question: Can you share a memorable or defining moment in your career that had a significant impact on you?

Rutger: One of my first records I signed on Hysteria was 'Derp' from Bassjackers and MAKJ. I only heard the melody (30 seconds) through phone and I told them if they finish that one I would like to sign it on Hysteria. And it's one of the biggest hits we released on Hysteria. This gave me the confidence to make a career out of this.

Question: Who is an emerging artist you think people should be listening to?

Rutger: There are loads of new artists at the moment that are doing cool stuff. But if I have to mention one, I would pick 'Galoski'.

Question: What's the best piece of advice you've ever received in your career?

Rutger: Actually I didn't. Mostly me and Bingo Players did it on our own. You need to figure everything out for yourself because there is no right or wrong way to do this.

Question: Can you share a mentor or role model who has had a significant influence on your career?

Rutger: I have to say Bingo Players (Paul Bäumer and Maarten Hoogstraten), they always believed in me and helped me to achieve what I'm doing right now.

Question: What qualities do you look for in an artist when considering signing them to your label?

Rutger: If they are consistent with their productions. Have a good attitude and eager to learn.

Question: What are some red flags that may discourage you from signing an artist?

Rutger: The biggest red flag must be when an artist sends a demo and in the email they mention a different label. You know that they just copy & pasted the text and have sent it to that other label first.

Question: How do you handle the delicate process of giving creative feedback to artists?

Rutger: I don't do it delicate. I personally think artists will benefit if they get honest feedback from A&R managers.

Question: How has joining LabelRadar impacted your day to day?

Rutger: It's been great! We joined LabelRadar 5 months ago and it helps getting demos sorted easily. Hysteria always looking for new talented artists. Thanks to LabelRadar, it's easy to connect with new talents and music!
